Healing from Birth Trauma

Healing from Birth Trauma

A few months ago marked my eight-year anniversary of running. It’s still astonishing that someone like me, who once despised running, not only started but has continued it. This transformation feels nothing short of miraculous. As I reflected on the early days of my running journey, I realized how much has changed—from my running style and mindset to the gear and shoes I now choose with care.

In the beginning, I wasn’t too concerned about the footwear I ran in. Sure, I invested in a pair of decent running shoes, but I didn’t spend a lot of time choosing them. My focus was on budget-friendly options that looked good and cost around fifty pounds. Looking back, it seems quite naive. I was also clueless about proper running gear; I even brought a handbag to my first run because I didn’t know where to stash my belongings. Yes, that was me!

I was unfamiliar with major running brands, had no idea what Strava was, and terms like ‘split’ or ‘PB’ were foreign to me. I didn’t realize there were different shoes for road running versus trail running. To say I was inexperienced would be an understatement.

Fast forward to today, and I go through trail shoes as fast as my kids consume the groceries. I now prioritize the right footwear depending on the terrain and running distance. Comfortable clothing is crucial for preventing chafing, and I understand that while I don’t want to break the bank, you often get what you pay for.

As part of my work as a blogger for Adidas, I have the exciting task of testing their gear occasionally. This month, the Adizero range caught my eye immediately. Here’s the lowdown:

What Is Adizero?

Before diving into the products I chose, let’s explore what Adizero is all about. Adizero focuses on creating lightweight products to minimize mass load and enhance performance. The idea is straightforward—the less burden you carry, the faster you can run.

The journey began in 2004 when Japanese craftsman Toshiaki Omori emphasized the importance of foot anatomy. The ideal shoe needed to support the foot while feeling invisible to the wearer, considering factors like material, weight, cushioning, varying running conditions like distance, terrain, and speed, and of course, aesthetics.

Adizero was under development for four years before a prototype of the Adizero Adios men’s running shoes was tested by Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie the night before the 2008 Berlin Marathon. He loved them so much he wore them during the race and broke the world record by 29 seconds.

I’m not suggesting you’ll break world records, but there’s an Adizero shoe suitable for every type of run. Whether it’s the Takumi Sen 9 for short, fast runs, the Boston 12 for mid to long-distance, or the Adizero Adios 8 for all-around performance, Adidas Adizero has you covered.

Adizero Adios 7 Shoes

I picked the Adizero Adios 7 shoes as they were described as versatile, just like me. I chose the prettiest color combination they had (Pulse Mint/Silver Metallic/Core Black) because why not? While not designed for tough trails, these shoes excel on roads or tracks, and their lightweight mesh allows great ventilation but isn’t meant for muddy conditions.

These women’s running shoes come with numerous features that make running easier:

  • Breathable mesh: Maximum ventilation keeps your feet fresh while providing support.
  • LIGHTSTRIKE PRO midsole: Soft foam for dynamic performance.
  • TORSIONRODS: Offer flexibility, granting both support and freedom for natural foot movement.
  • Adjustable lace closure: Customize your fit for comfort.
  • Lightweight: Each shoe weighs just 189.7g (size UK 5.5), contributing to faster run times.
  • Recycled materials: Made partially from recycled materials, addressing plastic waste issues.

These shoes feel custom-made for your feet, fitting perfectly and ready for action straight out of the box. They might not make me faster, as speed isn’t my focus, but they’re comfortable, light, and a delightful addition to my running shoe collection.

Adizero 7/8 Leggings

Regarding running leggings, I’m particular. They need to be high-waisted, stretchy, comfortable, dark-colored (for a slimming effect), and most importantly—pockets are a must. The Adizero 7/8 leggings meet all these criteria.

The comfort and fit are unmatched; wearing them feels like wearing nothing at all. Made from at least 70% recycled content, these leggings conform snugly to your body, staying in place without needing adjustments during runs. Perforated fabric enhances airflow, ensuring you stay cool and comfortable.

The leggings also score high on functionality. With laser perforation for airflow and a high-rise waist that provides a secure fit, they allow you to focus solely on your running. Plus, pockets galore—zippered side and waist pockets securely hold your essentials.

Their color, Aurora Black, offers a flattering, inky, deep-indigo shade with a neon green Adizero logo, standing out from typical runwear.

Adizero Running Tank Top

To complement the leggings, I chose the Adizero running tank in Aurora Black, though it’s available in Black and Semi Spark (a cheerful yellow). The fabric is incredibly light and cool. With perforated airholes, it’s ideal for summer, preventing overheating.

This racerback style includes taped areas to prevent chafing—a crucial feature for summer runs. Chafing is painful, but thanks to Adidas’s sweat-wicking AEROREADY technology, the vest keeps you dry and reduces this risk. Reflective details enhance visibility, and its loose fit is comfortable, providing ample coverage.

The vest’s lightness is its standout feature, offering superior airiness and quick drying after washing—ready for regular summer runs!

Final Thoughts

Trails are my passion—the mud, varying terrain, views, solitude, and sheer joy can’t be matched by road running. But sometimes, practical considerations necessitate road running. Whether these shoes and clothing make me faster, it’s uncertain—possibly the lure of a chocolate treat or making it home for dinner works better—but I’m willing to try.

What’s clear is that while I still care about my running gear’s appearance, I now also value their performance. The Adizero products please both my past and present self immensely.
